Designed for Canada’s Ecosystems

The Canadian Prescribed Fire Training Program (CPFTP) is the only national program dedicated specifically to prescribed fire training. Co-developed by the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus and the Weston Family Foundation, CPFTP is designed for Canadian ecosystems, policies, and operational realities. Through specialized, regionally informed training, the program supports the people who plan and use fire on the landscape.

The Role of Prescribed Fire

Prescribed fire is a rigorously planned practice used carefully as part of proactive land management to support biodiversity, healthy ecosystems, and resilient landscapes.

Training for Canadian Prescribed Fire Practitioners

CPFTP is designed to be accessible to diverse learners and relevant across the wide range of roles involved in prescribed fire planning and use. The program reflects the realities of working with prescribed fire across Canada’s landscapes, supporting sound decision-making, risk-aware planning and preparation, and the safe, effective use of prescribed fire where appropriate.
