Mission: To build understanding and advance the safe, effective use of prescribed fire through specialized training.
The Canadian Prescribed Fire Training Program (CPFTP) is a national initiative co-developed by the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus and the Weston Family Foundation, supported by Regional Leads and partners across Canada. CPFTP’s work is organized across five regions, ensuring training is informed by local ecological conditions while aligned through shared national standards.
CPFTP is housed within the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science at UBCO, where wildfire and fire ecology research inform training and education.
These goals are based on principles of safety and risk management, planning and preparation, competence and sound judgment, and national consistency with regional adaptability.
Develop training that meets competency requirements for a range of prescribed fire roles and positions.
Support Indigenous-led revitalization of cultural fire and Indigenous fire stewardship by ensuring equitable access to training and fostering leadership within Indigenous communities.
CPFTP’s work is grounded in safety, planning, and specialized competence. Drawing on applied experience and research expertise across prescribed fire practice, wildfire operations, and fire science, CPFTP provides accessible training pathways and shared standards that support responsible prescribed fire use across Canada’s diverse landscapes.
